Maple Hoisin Tofu

An easy yet really tasty and satisfying Maple Hoisin Tofu recipe! These slices of tofu are perfect enjoyed over a bowl of steamed rice or noodles.

MAPLE HOISIN SAUCE FOR THE TOFU

I cooked down some extra firm tofu cooked in a sweet & savoury maple-hoisin sauce and added some sriracha for that extra spice.

NOTE: you can use other liquid sweetener instead of maple syrup, but of course it’ll no longer be a maple hoisin tofu but a (whatever liquid sweetener you use) hoisin tofu, depending on the sweetener you use! 🙂

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THE TASTY SAUCE:

  • hoisin sauce
  • maple syrup
  • soy sauce or to taste
  • minced garlic
  • sriracha or other chili sauce

WHY I LOVE USING HOISIN SAUCE

I love using hoisin sauce because of that depth it gives to the overall flavour. A little hoisin sauce can go a really long way in sauces and stir-fries!

Also, some hoisin sauces are diluted and sweetened like hoisin condiments (usually those in squeeze bottles). If this is the case, you can start with 1-2 tbsp sweetener first.

I used purer and thicker hoisin sauce that is saltier than those in condiment bottles for dipping, so I added more sweetener to my tofu. You can check out the recipe card below for more tips!

MAPLE HOISIN TOFU GUA BAOS

You can also use this tofu as filling for some gua baos! For these I filled them with the tofu, pickled veg, peanuts, chili, and some herbs!

Check out my gua baos recipe here.

Hope you enjoy this maple hoisin tofu recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb extra firm tofu
  • Neutral oil for cooking

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2-4 tbsp  maple syrup adjust according to desired sweetnes, or other sweetener (see notes)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or to taste
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 2 tsp sriracha or other chili sauce, adjust according to desired heat

For serving

  • Steamed Rice
  • Chopped spring onions
  • Togarashi Japanese 7-spice blend

Instructions

  • Press your tofu for at least 10 minutes to drain excess liquid. I like to do this by wrapping the tofu in a towel and placing a heavy flat surface on top. Afterwards, slice tofu into thick 1-inch strips or your shape of choice.
  • Mix sauce ingredients together in a bowl. Feel free to adjust the measurements according to your desired taste. Set aside.
  • Heat a medium non-stick pan over medium high heat. Add some oil to coat the surface. Once hot, add in the sliced tofu. Fry the tofu until lightly brown on all sides. Pour in the sauce mix and then cook the tofu in the sauce over medium heat until it thickens. The sauce will thicken from the sugars of the sauce.
  • Once the tofu has absorbed some of the sauce, turn off the heat.
Garnish the tofu with some spring onions and togarashi, if desired. Enjoy warm with some rice.

Notes

Sweetener

  • Some hoisin sauces are diluted and sweetened like hoisin condiments. If this is the case, you can start with 1-2 tbsp sweetener first. I used purer and thicker hoisin sauce that is saltier than those in condiment bottles for dipping, so I added more sweetener.
  • You can also use other liquid sweetener instead of male syrup, but of course it’ll no longer be a maple hoisin tofu but a (whatever liquid sweetener you use) hoisin tofu, depending on the sweetener you use! 🙂

I actually ended up using this on tempeh instead of tofu but it was delicious! Used in the bao buns, and they were amazing. Restaurant quality

hey there 🙂 Is it better to marinate the tofu? To get the sauce to rlly absorb into it?

    1. Jeeca 12 Feb 2021 Reply

Hi Alex! Yes you can marinate it if you’d like for the sauce to really seep through. ◡̈

I have never tried any tyoe of tofu but i was looking for sone lifestyle changes. I needed some food alternatives. I got my kids into martial arts and was speaking with the instructor about a few things and he made this recipe and brought some to the studio for me to try. I am hooked i never thought you could transfer tofu into something so delicious even my youngest daughter at 12 can not get enough of it. I am glad he sent me over the link and can’t wait to try different recipes even though this one will be my favorite.

This is a very simple and VERY delicious preparation of tofu. I had it over jasmine rice and spicy greens to play off the sweet. Awesome.
